Fall 2012 Artwork

My work is about communication and community and this overly stimulating world that we live in.  I am trying to capture what it feels like to be alive in 2012, to draw attention to our surroundings, to represent the intersection between language, art, and culture that we encounter in day-to-day existence.  Like everyone else, I am an accidental collector of images and text; perhaps I am more obsessive about it.  What you say to me, that annoying song lyric that I can’t get out of my head, those weird thoughts that I don’t want anyone to know I have, some polite activism, a phrase of dialogue from a popular television show: all weave their way into the work.

The materials I use are chosen out of convenience: magazine cutouts and texts in Helvetica mounted on foam core and canvas boards make up the building blocks.  From there my practice extends to participatory wall pieces, collages, and, most recently, videos. My craftsmanship is at this in-between stage, hyper-neurotic and slightly askew; I like things to be contained and compulsively organized yet to have an air of contingency and haphazardness.
